Leadership

Review - M. Owens, "The Political Economy of National Defense"

I believe that the political economic system of Modern Liberalism best achieves the state’s twin goals of prosperity and security. The objective of this system is to enhance economic well being by redistributing wealth and regulating economic activity. The government does the allocation of resources necessary to produce goods for competing ends.

Under this system, the Government plays a major role in the economy. Modern Liberals justify Government intervention to correct problems such as monopolies and unsafe products. We loose some freedoms, domestically, by having to submit to the Government regulations and policies; however, internationally we can reduce conflict and improve security through economic interdependence.

Leadership -an Art, is it?

Why not a science? why an art? it is because of the fact that there are no hard and fast rules, that is why Leadership is defined an art. Everyone has the right to create his own leadership style. The leadership style is mostly defined by the various factors to name a few the principles they follow, business ethics, interpersonal relationship. Let us see the key points that define a leader.

Leadership Development Training

Any leadership development training should take into account some of the basic facts, which ought to be made available to the individual concerned for developing his leadership skill and techniques.

The training or program must adequately deal with deliberations on leadership, and not limit the understanding of the term to its limited sense. Any reference to conventional typecast leadership should be shunned. The training should also incorporate a comprehensive understanding of leadership virtues as applicable to individual requirements, and highlight the subtle differences between leadership and management.

Leading With A Chip On Your Shoulder

A Marine company commander I knew of had a memorable way of introducing himself to his platoon commanders. He called them into his office, gave them each a laminated wallet card, then dismissed them without saying a word.

The wallet card read, “Seven Ways To Get Me Angry.”

I don’t remember what they were, probably standard leadership guidelines like, “You make excuses.” “You don’t come through on your commitments.” “You look out for your career and not the troops.” They were important for the commander; and I guess for his lieutenants, but they’re not important here.

Real Leaders are Ordinary People With Extraordinary Determination

Leadership.

‘real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination’

This quote made me think about the qualities of leadership and how we know leaders from managers.

Key leadership attributes are considered to be integrity, trust, respect for others, curiosity, passion, business acumen, initiative, drive and vision.

We could debate any of these but in my view they form a pretty good basis and people who have most of these characteristics are likely to be good leaders, but only if they actively work to the characteristics.

To differentiate leaders from managers is to be able to think in such terms as;

What Leadership Is Not

Leadership is not being condescending to lesser. Leadership is not using emotional triggers to trick people into doing it your way. Leadership is not manipulating others. Anyone can do that and become a Catholic Priest. Leadership is not lying or telling stories or coaxing someone into your way of thinking.

Leadership is not about deception or misdirection. Leadership is not about staying on top of the mountain at all costs and using those under you as ponds. Anyone can do that. Leadership is none of that and the sooner you figure that out the better off you will be and those who follow you will be.

Leadership Skills and Ability

What is true Leadership.

Is leadership something we are born with or is it learned.

My belief is that there are some natural leaders but many
leadership skills are learned by hands on experience.

Many great leaders show leadership skills while at school
or at a young age but few of these children will go straight
into a leadership role on leaving school.

Lets define traits and skills associated with great leaders.
( not necessarily in this order)

supportive

innovative

sensitive

decisive

tireless

honest

mentor

persistent

Communication Skills & Leadership - Organizational Communications Processes in Leadership Activity

“Sooth ‘t were a pleasant life to lead,
With nothing in the world to do
But just to blow a shepherd’s reed,
The silent season thro’
And just to drive a flock to feed,-
Sheep - quiet, fond and few!”

- Laman Blanchard

Communication skills give leaders ways to connect with, understand and influence the needs of people. It would be so very pleasant to live the life depicted in Blanchard’s musings.

Even though leadership combines the roles of shepherd, steward and orchestral conductor, people are not sheep, people do not dance to every tune, people will not feed on any old meal.

The Best Decision Makers in the World

There’s a group of people who are at the pinnacle of decision making. They can make a snap decision in less that the blink of an eye. And those decisions can make the difference between absolute success and complete failure.

So who are these people?

They are the sportsmen and sportswomen at the top of their game. In any sport, especially those that require quick reflexes such as football, tennis, baseball or cricket the top players must be able to make important decisions quickly.

How to Solve Disputes with the Helicopter Talk Technique

Do you ever find that when a friend asks for your opinion on a problem it is a lot easier for you to see a solution than it is for your friend?

And do you also find that sometimes you feel completely stuck when it comes to your own problems?

The same applies to disputes, relationship issues and disagreements.

When you are part of the problem it can be very difficult to see a solution. What you need at times like this is a helicopter!
